So, I might obtain a bike after trading in the Burgman 400, and to be honest, two bikes are within the sub 4K range.
First off, is a Honda 919 Hornet. 2006, 919(?)cc from the CBR900 Fireblade, done 28,000 miles and appears pristine (save for the Givi windshield and a flimsy speed radar mount.) Dealer is asking $3,150 with tax, licensing and trade out the door (provided the Burg is in good condition.)
Second up is a 2006 Suzuki Vstrom DL1000 that's done 67K miles, comes with Givi pannier cases and also appears to be pristine. Asking $3,699 (Trade, tax and licensing unknown.)
Halp?

I read a lot of good things about the V-strom but I don't know how they handle that many miles . It is surely the more practical of the two .

Experience?
The vstrom got really good reviews back in the day iirc. Suzuki's little v twin is a sweet little engine.
Also, you might want to check out rude apart. They love this kind of question and they know their stuff for the most part. Way more experience than you're going to find on oppo (which may or may not be saying something, I don't know how many oppos ride).

I'd buy the bike with the lowest miles (Hornet). I don't like buying used, but when I do, I buy the lowest mileage possible. There are other factors to consider also... Was the bike garaged or did it sit outside ? (Look for faded plastic) How meticulous were the previous owner(s) with maintenance ? (Look for clean chain and healthy sprockets) Is there any dirt or rust in the nooks and crannies ? It's important to pay attention to the details.
